It has almost no grain and rarely if ever splinters. Because of its light weight and low strength, it is not suitable for heads, bodies or fingerboards. Basswood makes a great soundboard that tends to help let through a little more of the lower frequencies (similar in sound to other light woods such as spruce or cedar) while still giving you the hardwood look.
