Customize Your Own Mountain Dulcimer Fingerboard
Need a customized fingerboard for the mountain dulcimer you are building? Now, you can customize your fingerboard. Just choose from any of the options below to add your own special touch to your dulcimer.
Fingerboard Width
A wider fingerboard gives the advantage of a little more space between the strings, making it easier to finger chords. Plus, a wider finger is a little stiffer. If you will be making a six string or baritone dulcimer the wider fingerboard is recommended.

Fingerboard Material
Choose the wood that best matches the mountain dulcimer that you are creating. If you will be adding a fingerboard veneer (which is the next option), we suggest sugar maple. Sugar maple provides a high contrast in color with most of the veneers available.

Veneer
Veneers are a great way to add personal style and contrast to your dulcimer. We suggest using a highly contrasting color of veneer on the fingerboard. We usually use sugar maple as the base wood because it is more stable and contrasts well with the majority of the veneer woods.

Frets
Do you want us to install the frets for you? If so, choose "Cut Slots And Install Frets". If you want to install the frets yourself, just choose "Cut Slots Only".

Scale Length
Choose the scale length that is right for you. The traditional scale length for the dulcimer is 27 inches. However, some people prefer the longer scale length of 29 1/4 inches.

Resonating Chamber Cut
A groove cut on the back of the fingerboard underneath the frets that increases the resonant volume of your dulcimer and concentrates the contact area of your fingerboard in a smaller area.

Strum Hollow
A strum hollow doesn't affect the sound of your dulcimer, yet it will make it much less likely for your pick to hit the fingerboard while strumming.
