I had Richard build me a custom dulcimer after I heard the review of Wendy Songe's new dulcimer with a magnetic pickup. I was looking for something that would reproduce the string sounds in very clear and positive way.
True to his word he not only built a dulcimer that looked great, but will knock your socks off with the sound. Not something bought , but a pickup made in Woodburn,Indiana USA.

I received my gorgeous D series dulcimer two weeks ago. Prior to this I had never seen, let alone played one. Yet I was inspired by a number of my favorite tunes and artists including the late Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones and Cyndi Lauper. I have quite a collection of stringed/fretted instruments so the dulcimer was relatively easy for me to pick up with some great instructional lessons online.
So just a beginner but intent on improving everyday and learning different musical genres from Pachabel to The Beatles. I have several fiddler friends and I was actually able to sit in with them on a few standard old-timey tunes using just a few chords. I wish however that I had ordered my dulcimer with a pickup as playing with my fiddler buddies requires a bit more volume.
In short I would order another one from Folkcraft without a second thought. Maybe the resonator model?

This Fall, I had an added bonus with my beautiful Bass dulcimer. Playing the bass at the clinic with Mandy Tyner (BANJOLEMONADE) let me provide that low bass tones to the fiddle songs. Loving my bass.

I recently received my Folkcraft FSH series dulcimer and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the instrument. I (finally) decided, after much discussion back and forth with Richard Ash, to go with the cherry back, sides, top and fretboard and I’m very happy with the decision. I also chose the scroll head and it adds an elegance that makes me smile every time I pick up the instrument to play. One of the toughest decisions was the VSL, because I have an injured left hand so, after much deliberation, I went with the 24” and don’t regret it. It makes this instrument a breeze to play. The care that Folkcraft puts into their instruments is so evident. The finish of this dulcimer is so smooth and the sound is so pure that I have trouble putting it down. Richard was so informative that I could make my purchase with confidence. Thank you, Folkcraft…I’ll be back for more!
