New Flat Head Design For Mountain Dulcimers (Posted by Nicholas Young on 9/1/2009)
It's modern... It's stylish... It's the new Folkcraft contemporary flat head design!
This design originally came to light when "Annie" (Bing Futch's prized double neck dulcimer) was built. It surfaced again in the production of the chromatic Koa beauty, better known as "Kamalani" (yet another 'Bing-inspired' dulcimer). Our new flat head design is now available on Folkcraft CSH and Folkcraft Custom series mountain dulcimers.
We are again slightly deviating from the "norm," in that this headstock has a prominent guitar-style design with all the enclosed gear tuning machines on one side. On this one, however, the veneer doesn't cover the entire headstock. It is inset into the center of the head, and "passes through" as a continuation from the fingerboard veneer.
Contemporary Flat Head / Traditional Flat Head
Naturally, I am excited to see this option is now available for Folkcraft mountain dulcimers. In fact, I have a four string Custom model being made for me right now with this new flat head design (walnut, butternut, and ebony, in case you were wondering).

When people think of heirloom-quality instruments, they think of Folkcraft. Here's why: Our instruments are handmade in the United States of America, not in a cheap overseas factory. Our instruments are crafted one at a time, not on an assembly line. Our instruments are made of solid woods, not out of plywood.
Folkcraft instruments are made with pride and tradition, using the same methods as our founders used in 1968. Folkcraft Instruments is a family business, with two generations of luthiers putting their skill and experience into every instrument they create.
