Sugar maple is strong and durable, and holds a tune really well, but more importantly, it provides our kanteles with a bold, strong sound. On top of the sugar maple body, we've applied a butternut (white walnut) soundboard. Butternut is exceedingly soft and delicate (not at all like black walnut), and is perhaps the most attractive of all of the soft woods.   With fifteen strings, you get a full two octave D major scale. You could easily tune your kantele to play a two octave C major scale if you preferred.   To play the instrument, you can hold it upright against your body, with the strings facing away from you, or you can lay the instrument across your lap with the strings facing upwards.
