Folkcraft Kantele - Sugar Maple Body With Engelmann Spruce Soundboard

This kantele was handmade in the United States by the two-generation team of Folkcraft luthiers.

The body of this instrument is sugar maple, which is renowned for its hardness (mechanically) and for its right, reflective properties in instrument making. We've paired the maple body of this instrument with Engelmann spruce. Your kantele will have the bold, bright sound of sugar maple combined with the high-frequency brightness of our Engelmann spruce soundboard. (When I say bright, I'm talking smooth projection, not ugly high-frequency distortion.)

With fifteen strings, you get a full two octave D major scale. You could easily tune your kantele to play a two octave C major scale if you preferred.

To play the instrument, you can hold it upright against your body, with the strings facing away from you, or you can lay the instrument across your lap with the strings facing upwards. While the vertical position may be more traditional, we enjoy performing with the instrument on the lap, as this allows easy use of both hands while creating music.

When people think of heirloom-quality instruments, they think of Folkcraft. Here's why: Our instruments are handmade in the United States of America, not in a cheap overseas factory. Our instruments are crafted one at a time, not on an assembly line. Our instruments are made of solid woods, not out of plywood.

Folkcraft instruments are made with pride and tradition, using the same methods as our founders used in 1968. Folkcraft Instruments is a family business, with two generations of luthiers putting their skill and experience into every instrument they create.
