About Quartersawn Red Oak: The word "quartersawn" refers to the way that a log is milled into planks while in the lumberyard. The result of quartersawing a log is planks of wood that have a vertical grain (the growth rings of the wood go from the top of the plank to the bottom of the plank, rather than side to side). Red oak makes a beautiful looking (and sounding) instrument. Oak is a bit harder than walnut, and is generally used for all parts of a dulcimer except for the soundboard. The red oak we use at Folkcraft is native to northern Indiana. See wood building supplies made from Quartersawn Red Oak
