 Quartersawn Red Oak Dulcimer Back/Soundboard

This quartersawn red oak blank set includes 2 pieces of book matched quartersawn red oak each measuring 4" x 32" (may vary by up to 1/8") for a total of 8" x 32" with a thickness of 1/8" (finished to 120 grit).

For the "Joined, Glued And Sanded" options, we have joined the edges of the two pieces, glued them together and sanded the resulting piece on both sides giving you a single book matched piece with a seam down the middle.

About Quartersawn Red Oak: The word "quartersawn" refers to the way that a log is milled into planks while in the lumberyard. The result of quartersawing a log is planks of wood that have a vertical grain (the growth rings of the wood go from the top of the plank to the bottom of the plank, rather than side to side). Red oak makes a beautiful looking (and sounding) instrument. Oak is a bit harder than walnut, and is generally used for all parts of a dulcimer except for the soundboard. The red oak we use at Folkcraft is native to northern Indiana.

When people think of heirloom-quality instruments, they think of Folkcraft. Here's why: Our instruments are handmade in the United States of America, not in a cheap overseas factory. Our instruments are crafted one at a time, not on an assembly line. Our instruments are made of solid woods, not out of plywood.

Folkcraft instruments are made with pride and tradition, using the same methods as our founders used in 1968. Folkcraft Instruments is a family business, with two generations of luthiers putting their skill and experience into every instrument they create.
