This piece can be used as either a back or soundboard for a bowed psaltery. We typically combine two pieces of butternut to create this single soundboard/back.   About Butternut: Butternut is a relatively light weight hardwood that works similarly to walnut. It has a light brown color and an open grain that make it an excellent contrast to dark brown hardwoods like walnut or mahogany.
