This black walnut blank is large enough to create standard heads for mountain/Appalachian dulcimers. We offer it in a single block that measures 1 and 1/2 inches by 3 inches by 8 inches, or in a two piece arrangement (so you can add a decorative veneer between the two blocks for contrast) where each piece measures 3/4 inches by 3 inches by 8 inches.

About Black Walnut: As one of the most traditional and most beautiful of the woods used in folk instruments, black walnut is a great choice for almost any part of your instrument. Black walnut ranges in color from tan to very dark brown with occasional hints of red or purple in some pieces. The wood tends to have quite a few knots (we try to ship clear pieces), so there is a fair amount of waste when starting from raw wood and it can be hard to get large pieces. Walnut is fairly heavy and hard, works and sands easily, and leaves your instrument with a good tone quality.
