Making your own hammered dulcimer? We can help!

Our Sitka spruce hammered dulcimer soundboard stock is quartersawn using 3-4 pieces to make a top. You'll assemble these pieces to make a glue-up that you can use to build a hammered dulcimer (traditional trapezoid shape) that measures up to 42 inches wide and 18 inches high. Our soundboard material is just right for a finished product that ends up at 1/4 inch thick.

Spruce typically gives a more diverse tone than other woods due to its stiffness and light weight. Spruce also tends to hold its clarity better when playing louder.

Our hammered dulcimer soundboard stock is shipped unassembled. You'll need to glue up the pieces before you cut out the back/soundboard for your instrument.

About Sitka Spruce: Sitka spruce is native to Alaska. The trunk of a mature Sitka spruce tree is typically 15 feet in diameter. Technically a softwood, Sitka spruce is both strong and light. It is often used as soundboards/tops in guitars, violins, dulcimers, and many other instruments.

When people think of heirloom-quality instruments, they think of Folkcraft. Here's why: Our instruments are handmade in the United States of America, not in a cheap overseas factory. Our instruments are crafted one at a time, not on an assembly line. Our instruments are made of solid woods, not out of plywood.

Folkcraft instruments are made with pride and tradition, using the same methods as our founders used in 1968. Folkcraft Instruments is a family business, with two generations of luthiers putting their skill and experience into every instrument they create.
